Happy Juneteenth from the YGB Team!

Juneteenth represents the day that slavery was truly abolished in the United States, and for us it was the beginning of the long road towards equal opportunity for the black community of the USA. Though President Abraham Lincoln declared the abolishment of slavery in 1863, it took multiple years for many regions to receive news of the country-wide emancipation. Because of this, June 19 1865, when the news finally reached Texas, is the day many consider the true day to celebrate the freedom of slaves in the United States.

Juneteenth and STEM

Beyond its historical importance, Juneteenth gives us an opportunity to highlight black leaders in STEM, fight for representation and equality in STEM fields, and inspire youth from all backgrounds to pursue STEM careers.

Even today, there is a fight for fair and equal representation in the STEM world, but black scientists continue to make their mark on the world with incredible inventions, discoveries, technology, and so much more. This week should be all about celebrating these STEM leaders, and inspiring youth from all backgrounds to pursue STEM, because STEM is for everyone.

Representation in STEM Matters

The struggle for equality in STEM is a year-round battle, however, Juneteenth is a chance for people to explore the historical, economic, and societal factors that have shaped the experiences of the black community in STEM fields. This day also provides a great time to highlight black inventors, scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians through history, and today.

Juneteenth allows us to empower students to follow their dreams, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. If young people can feel represented in STEM fields, and can connect to STEM in a deeper way, they are more likely to be inspired to follow their ambitions.

Diversity in STEM Matters

People from diverse backgrounds can bring new ideas and perspectives, and are able to look at problems from new angles, and that is why diversity is so important in STEM. When any field lacks diversity, it misses the chance for revolutionary ideas and new ways of thinking. Here at YGB, we believe that diversity in STEM is the key to a brighter future, for everyone.

Conclusion

Juneteenth is an incredibly important day in history, and we believe that it is the perfect time to highlight black STEM leaders and inspire youth from underrepresented communities to pursue a STEM career. We know that true progress only happens when we all work together towards a better future, and we are determined to be a part of that change.
